Very Good
Very large renovated hotel. Gardens looked lovely and restaurants downstairs. Was very busy so we didn't get to use them but had a lot of bars/restaurants in hotel.
Room was clean and a good size. Comfortable bed.
Several times heard banging on our door yet no one was outside. Found it odd yet later on found out floor 2 is haunted...

Wonderful
Loved this hotel - it was the perfect blend of old architecture and modern amenities. I had dinner and breakfast there and both were excellent. Great location right across from the train station and good parking just beside the hotel too. Common areas and rooms were well decorated and appointed. Bed super comfy. I didnt want to leave!
Only small downside was the room doors didnt close silently, so you could hear other doors closing in the hallway but it wasnt bothersome.

Poor
The size of the room was good
The bed was collapsed in the middle which we only realised at 12:30am. The tap in the bathroom was sat on top of the toilet so it was extremely narrow.
The worst was everytime a tap was turned on or a toilet was flushed the pipe noise was unbearable for at least 10 mins afterwards.
The staff when we told them about it the next day didn't even apologise.
I went to the bar the bar staff was also we very rude too.

Pleasant
Good location
Booked a double room only to find we had two single beds pushed together when we were expecting a double bed.

Very Poor
The location is great.
I booked a non-refundable booking via booking.com for Sunday 4 May for my wife’s birthday and paid £83.39. I carefully filtered my search for dog friendly hotels in Chester on booking.com and looked at the Q&A on the hotel listing fee as note that the hotel details stated that a pet charge would apply. All of the replies to Q&As were that the fee would be £15 so I was happy to proceed with my non-refundable booking.
After I booked up I dutifully messaged the hotel on booking.com to let them know I would be bringing my small Pomeranian. I was then told I would have to pay a £50 fee.
I had a long exchange via the booking.com messaging system but it was much a very much “computer says no” response that the charge would be the charge.
At check in I again raised the point with the duty manager and paid the £50 fee (much to my disappointment).
To explain my position- I booked a non-refundable hotel room for £83.39 and was then told the pet would be £50; the fee was more than 60% of the cost of my hotel room. Nowhere on on booking.com does it state that the fee would be £50 and the hotel has elected to not updated the previous Q&As that stated the fee was £15 which in my view is fairly disingenuous. My dog was charged more on a per person basis that me and my wife. I’m also dumbfounded that my £50 charge didnt include basic stuff like a dog bowl, dog treats etc. It’s basically a dog penalty which is very much at odds with the hotel’s PR that it is dog friendly.
Incredulously the duty manager offered to refund my hotel room charge and cancel my booking in its entirety rather than waive or reduce the dog charge which is fairly perverse given that I had travelled to Chester and had queued for 35 minutes to check in - by odd the hotel would be willing to refund £83.39 than waive/reduce a £50 charge which they know will give rise to bad will.

The room was comfortable and quiet.
The bathroom light over the sink was not working. I informed the staff but it was never fixed during our stay.
